Out of Control Bridesmaids
How to deal with a bad bridesmaid
Even great bridesmaids can unleash a little craziness at times! I know it seems harsh but they may need to be contained like these two…
We’ve all seen it before, out of control bridesmaids who want to live their dream through your wedding day. They mean well. They love you so much but they can become a little over-excited. A controlling bridesmaid can cause you stress and anxiety that is simply not needed on the happiest day of your life. You need to shut down that craziness before it even begins.
There are a few signs that may set off alarm bells early on. Here are some examples…
- They seem to have a lot to say about your dress, your hair, your makeup, the shade and colour of the napkins, your celebrants’ personality, your taste in general {sound the alarm}.
- They start sending you Pinterest boards for ideas you haven’t asked for.
- They start contacting vendors just to be helpful, without your say so.
- They gift you their old bridal magazines with dog ear pages, sticky notes and highlighted sections.
- They read a blog of 100 questions to ask your photographer and demand that you check these 100 points with yours.
- They give you a ‘must have’ photo list to hand to your photographer {run photographer run!}
- All conversation is steered toward wedding planning and decision making.
- Conversation turns into what they don’t like about what they’re wearing, what they will be doing, how they are going to help.
- They start hinting about the day they helped a makeup artist, stylist, photographer and everything but the qualified celebrant.
- When the pick an argument with another bridal party member.
So how can you try and defuse these early signs of craziness?
- Remind them that it’s your day and you’re capable of making choices.
- Thank them for something that has truly been helpful. Tell them that you understand that they’re excited but it’s your day and you’re capable of making choices.
- Give them very specific jobs and explain that you’ve got the rest under control.
So everything may tend to settle down, once you keep a lid on their excitement. But be warned, the wedding day may unleash the bad behaviours all over again.
Here are three signs your bridesmaids need locking up for a little time out…
1. They start barking orders in the getting ready room.
2. They start chasing their tails.
3. They start jumping up and down when your lip colour is wrong.
So how can you fix this?
1. Feed and hydrate them (hydrate with something strong).
2. Take them for a walk.
3. If all else fails, give them some time out.
